1)Introduction

There is plenty of information on the net about 'Dance Dance Revolution' (DDR), which is great. In the UK we have the 'Dancing Stage' games, which are essentially the same in all but name, but it is harder to find information about these. That's why I've written this FAQ (and others).

If you have any questions about the EuroMix 2 arcade that I haven't covered here, please e-mail me them at ranma-tim@care2.com, and I'll try to find out the answer and include it. Also please let me know about anything that puzzled you for a long time (but that you eventually worked out!) that I don't already have here.

WARNING: I'm not totally infallible! Let me know if you find something here to be wrong! Yes, even if you notice that I've got the difficulty of one song wrong by just one foot!

2) Frequently Asked Questions

In late summer 2002, a sequel to 'Dancing Stage EuroMix' was finally released. And what a sequel! While EuroMix 1 had just 28 songs, EuroMix 2 has 68 (although 12 of them were on EuroMix 1). The game also featured songs with variable speed, and 'freeze arrows' which have to be held down instead of tapped. The old 'secret' modifiers (Mirror, Little etc) were kept but with changed codes, and new modifiers (Dark, Speed Change etc) added (see code section below). Finally, it introduced 10-foot songs to the UK in the form of Max300's single and double modes. Awesome!

Q: How can I get on the darn scoreboard?!
A: Do well enough in Non-stop mode, playing one of the sets called "Easy 1", "Normal 1" or "Hard 1". Non-stop mode can only be chosen at the start of your game! For more details, see the non-stop listing.

Q: Why do I keep failing on my last song?
A: The penalty for missing a step gets bigger as you go along. So on the first song, you can make quite a few mistakes (and in fact if you're doing a song on Beginner difficulty, failing won't even end your go), but still do okay - whereas on the last song, a single miss will take the energy bar down by about 1/4! This means it only takes a few misses in a row to wipe you out. Ther are also different settings that the arcade operator can put the machine on, making you lose more or less energy per miss.

Q: I'm just about ready for 9-foot (Catastrophic) songs. Which should I try first?
A: That depends on what you're best at. If you can read fast arrows then you should definitely try 'Paranoia KCET' - on other DDR arcades, this is only ranked as an 8-footer. Exactly the same thing goes for 'Crash!', including the fact that it's an 8-footer on other mixes!
If you have plenty of stamina and can handle 'turns' (that's when you get steps like R, D, L, D, R and you turn your body to the right in order to hit all the Downs with your right foot and all the others with your left), then 'Can't Stop Falling in Love (Speed Mix)' would be an excellent choice.
On the other hand, if you can't stand the pace but you've got rhythm, go for Hypnotic Crisis or Vanity Angel.

Q: Even though I'm holding down the freeze arrows, they don't stay lit! Why? What can I do about it?
A: As you might have guessed, this is usually due to the arcade pads getting worn out. A good trick to get around this is to bob up and down on the arrow (or arrows) to the beat. This works because a freeze arrow will stay lit even if you are off it for a very short amount of time.

Q: I keep messing up on those bits when there are lots of the same arrow in a row! What can I do?
A: 'Bunny steps' like these come up in a few songs such as 'Can't Stop Falling in Love (Speed Mix)' and 'Dead End'. If you're having difficulty just hammering away with your leg, there are a few alternative techniques. One is to simply squat down slightly; this gives your muscles a better angle for powering up and down repeatedly. A more stylish option is to alternate between using your heel and your toe to hit the arrow. Finally, you can try using both feet on the one panel, running on the spot. All of these techniques vary in usefulness between one person and another, so be sure to try them all!

Q: How can I pass Max300 on Expert?
A: Practice a lot on other songs first. Practice practice practice! Then when you've done that, practice some more. After a bit more practicing, you might be ready to start attempting this monster. Refine your technique so you lift your feet as little as possible. Listen to the song every day to learn the timing. And maybe, just maybe, consider learning back and holding onto the bar. This will take the weight off your feet and make it easier in the long run, although it takes some getting used to. Also, see the next answer.

Q: Is holding on to the bar cheating?
A: You can only cheat when there are rules. When playing on your own for fun, there are no rules: anything goes, and if it means you have more fun, so much the better. But remember that if you can pass Max300 using the bar, when it comes to bragging about it, the fact that you're using the bar matters - doing it without the bar is a whole different thing. There is much debate and argument about this, and the nearest to an official answer on the matter is that the manual that comes with a EuroMix 2 machine strongly suggests that using the bar 'to keep your balance' is alright.
My advice: use the bar to achieve new things (passing a song for the first time, or getting all perfects), then try to do it without the bar. Although personally, I'm worried that if I start using the bar I won't be able to stop, so I don't.

Q: Is there a home version?
A: Short answer: No.
Long answer: kind of. 16 of the songs are available with Party Edition, 12 with MegaMix (notably Max 300), 11 with EuroMix, 7 with Fever and 1 with Disney Mix (the songlist table below indicates which). If you want to play the songs at home that aren't covered by these releases, your best bet is to use a PC, and stepmania or DWI. There's quite a bit you should know about going this route, but that is well covered by their respective websites, so go there and check it out!

Q: Is there anywhere I can find out what the steps are for a song?
A: www.ddruk.com has a 'step chart generator' that will do this for you. Very nice!

Q: How can I find the nearest arcade that has a EuroMix 2 machine in it?
A: Again, www.ddruk.com has the answer in its machines database - although it is incomplete, so you'd be advised to lurk around the nearest machine you can find and ask other players about other nearby machines.

Q: What about my question that you haven't included here?!
A: E-mail me it at ranma-tim@care2.com, and I'll see what I can do!

3) Song List

Here are all 68 of the songs on EuroMix 2 along with their difficulties, in the order they appear on the machine. Vanity Angel is marked out in bold as it represents the half-way point - to select any of the songs that come after it, you're better scrolling around the selection wheel the other way.
As of v1.42 of this FAQ, I've started filling in the Beginner difficulties! If you happen to note down any of those I've missed so far and send them to me, I'd be very happy!
BPM = Beats Per Minute, i.e. speed. Note that some songs change speed!
Difficulties are abbreviated: B = Beginner, S = Standard, D = Difficult, E = Expert. There is no Beginner Double Mode!
Home versions (HV) are abbreviated as follows: E = EuroMix, DM = Disney Mix, PE = Party Edition, M = MegaMix, F = Fever. Note that the home versions get you 38 of the 68 songs. See the question on home versions above.

4) Non-Stop List

When you're selecting your first song, you'll notice that right at the start of the songlist is the 'Nonstop' option. If you choose this, you then get to pick a predetermined set of 5 songs. This is a pretty good deal when you usually only get 3 songs for your credit, and is well worth a look. In the following table, the 8 different available sets are shown, the difficulties of the songs being shown in colour: standard, difficult and expert. Only high scores for Easy 1, Normal 1 and Hard 1 are listed on the machine. Hard 2 is nonetheless the ultimate challenge of skill - four exhausting 9-foot songs, followed by the killer, Max 300! Good luck!

5) Codes

Enter these from the song selection menu (once you've selected the song, it's too late). When you successfully input the code, its name appears in one of the bars on the bottom left. You have to input the commands in rapid succession - putting them in slowly does not work.

Hidden Mode: L, U, R
(Arrows disappear as they travel up the screen)

Sudden Mode: Activate Hidden mode, then add L, U, R
(Arrows only appear halfway up the screen)

Stealth Mode: Activate Sudden mode, then add L, U, R
(Arrows only appear when it's too late)

Left Mode: U, D, R, L
(Arrows are shifted anti-clockwise of their normal positions, so you get left arrows instead of up, etc)

Right Mode: U, D, L, R
(Arrows are shifted clockwise of their normal positions, so you get right arrows instead of up, etc)

Shuffle Mode: U, D, U, D, U, D
(Arrows appear at the same time as normal, but in a random direction, so the up arrows could become lefts, rights or downs, or stay the same.)

Mirror Mode: U, L, R, L, R
(Left and Right arrows swap, and Up and Down arrows swap. NOTE! This doesn't actually mirror the pattern, but instead *rotates* it through 180 degrees. This means you could learn a song in mirror mode, then play in normal mode, but dance while facing your audience!)

Little Mode: L, D, R
(Half and 1/4 steps do not appear. This means players of different experience levels can play at the same time, the lesser experienced player using little mode.)

Flat Mode: Activate Little mode, then add L, D, R
(All arrows are now the same colour - this makes it harder to spot off-beat arrows.)

Solo Mode: Activate Flat mode, then add L, D, R
(Arrows are now clearly coloured depending on whether they are on the beat, half-beat, eighth beat etc.)

Dark Mode: Activate Solo mode, then add L, D, R
(The 'target arrows' at the top of the screen do not appear, making it harder to tell when to step)

Reverse Mode: D, L, R, L, R
(Arrows go down instead of up!)

Boost: U, L, R, D, U, or perhaps just L, R, D, U
(Arrows accelerate as they go up the screen!)

Freeze Off: R, L, D, U
('Freeze arrows' are arrows where you have to hold your foot down. This gets rid of them.)

Speed Up: U, U, L, D, L
(Each time entered, this moves the arrows up a speed, from normal to 1.5x normal, then to 2x, 3x, 5x, 8x. Note that you don't actually have to dance faster - although the arrows are moving up the screen faster, they are more spaced out.)

Speed Down: D, D, R, U, R
(Each time entered, this moves the arrows down the speed order described above, but does not slow them down past normal speed.)

Cancel any code: L, R, L, R, L, R, L, R
Or, for Little/Flat/Solo/Dark Modes, keep putting in L, D, R until it goes!

Other Codes:
Sorry, but as far as I know there are no more codes of any kind for EuroMix 2 - not even rumours!

6) Scoring

The maximum possible score for any given song is equal to 10,000,000 (ten million) times the number of feet. So, the most you can score doing an 8-foot song is 80,000,000, and the highest score you can possibly get is 100,000,000 - but to get that you'd have to get all perfects on Max 300, so good luck with that.

Since the maximum score is already determined, the score for each step depends on how many steps there are in the song. For example, if there are 100 steps in a 2-foot song, the maximum score is 20,000,000 and any 'Perfect' step is worth 20,000,000/100 = 200,000. A 'Great' is worth half as much, and a 'Good' a fifth as much as that. Anything less is worth nothing.

In non-stop mode, the scoring is just the same, your final score being simply the total of the individual song scores - exactly as you'd expect.

That's all there is to it! A useful point to note is that the combo plays no part in the scoring at all. Also you might note that it's entirely possible that each step is worth a fractional number of points - for example, if there are 300 steps in a 2-foot song, each one should be worth 20,000,000/300 = 66,666.666... In this case, the fraction is knocked off and you only get 66,666 points for each perfect step. To make the maximum score work, the fractions are all saved up and are awarded if you hit the very last step! But while this means the last step is worth more than the others, it is pretty insignificant compared with the value of getting Perfects, so this subtle point need only concern mathematicians and pedants.

7) Version Notes and Thanks

11/8/4 Version 1.93 - More beginner difficulties, various tweaks people pointed out to me.

2/3/4 Version 1.91 - Noted which songs are available on MegaMix, added yet more beginner difficulties (only 19 to go!), corrected the non-stop scoring at Lawrence Chu's direction.

26/10/3 Version 1.9 - Songlist is now correctly ordered, and reformatted to make it look much nicer. It now even tells you which home version the songs are available on! Various other tweaks and fixes were made. Once I finally get the last Beginner difficulties, I'll say I've reached v2.0!

7/10/3 Version 1.5 - finally sorting things out properly here. More beginner difficulties, and the songlist is now presented in the same order that you'll find it in the arcade! (Well, the first 49 songs are - I'm yet to check the rest). Most importantly, I've added the non-stop mode songlists and the scoring system, as was suggested by a few people. A few other tweaks and additions have been made, but I lose track - I've been adding bits to this version for months now.

Version 1.42 acknowledges that in fact, the song list isn't really complete, since I haven't included the Beginner difficulties. I've started adding them as I see them - 22 down, 46 to go! Also I've included the BPM for songs, and corrected my earlier mistake of calling the high-scoring non-stop modes 'Rankings 1-3' (as they were on EuroMix 1) rather than 'Easy 1', 'Normal 1' and 'Hard 1'.

With version 1.4, the song list is finally complete! There do not appear to be any secret unlockable songs, nor any further codes, although if I hear of any they will of course appear here immediately.

Any questions I get asked will be added, but other than that there are no plans for further developing this FAQ. Thanks again to everyone that has helped my research, and to everyone that has sent me questions!
